2011 Scholarship Awards

Two $1000 scholarships awarded by the
Western Washington County Employer Council

A local non-profit that links the business community, the Employment Department and the local workforce awarded two $1000 scholarships to two local graduates.  The Western Washington County Employer Council (WWCEC), hopes to bridge the growth of our community with up and coming leaders in Washington County.

One of the scholarships was awarded to Katrina M. Henderson a student at the Arts & Communication Magnet Academy in the Beaverton School District.  Katrina has been an outstanding student during her years at Arts & Communication.  She received glowing references from several of her teachers as well as from the Student Management Supervisor.  Katrina's goal is to become a bilingual elementary school teacher.  She has volunteered to a variety of community service, but has a strong connection with the Candelighters.

Maria Cristina Castillo Santana is the second recipient to receive $1000.  Maria is a student at Tigard High School.  In her application to the scholarship, Maria was able to show us how organized and how attention to detail is important to her.  Maria is involved with the Upward Bound Program at Tigard High School.  She will be the first generation in her family to attend college and has worked very hard to reach that point.     Maria's leadership qualities and committment to volunteering in her community will help her reach her goals.

WCEC looks forward to seeing these young students be successful in their educational goals as well as in their careers.  We hope to be able to continue our committment to help build the workforce in the Washington County community.

WWCEC is made up of several local employers who volunteer their time and efforts to create opportunities for other employers and their employees to improve their skills and knowledgebase.  We coordinate and hose monthly
seminars covering timely topics that interest many local employers and mangers.  The WWCEC is a tremendous resource, not only for the education, but as a venue for employers to seek out a more involved presense in the community and to have a greater influence on employment concerns.
